More about J. Davis

Miss Davis began her career in glass at the New York Experimental Glass Workship while studying at the Parsons School of Design. She was the first Parsons student to earn a degree with a specialization in glass. She spent five years in Seattle where she pursued her vision for creating functional furniture incorporating handmade glass. She has been active with the Pilchuck Glass School and the Pratt Fine Arts Center. She is currently living and working in Providence, RI and her work is exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world.

Davis is constantly asked to categorize her work. People ask, 'Is this furniture, or sculpture?' Her answer is, 'Both'.

Davis' work draws from historical decorative arts, modern design, and her love for the remarkable optic and tactile qualities inherent to glass. The tremendous strength of glass allows her to explore ways of using it in the creation of furniture which is at once functional and sculptural. The goal in a finished piece is that the hours she has devoted to its creation will be conveyed to the user. Conveyed not simply through the precision of fine craftsmanship, but rather by the presence of a fierce vitality.

It is the artists strong belief that the experience of using hand made objects is different than that of using their machine made equivalents. Not just different, but better; more human, and hopefully more thought provoking. It is her hope that by putting part of her life into a piece, the user will want to do likewise.
